Overview
Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia are the main hubs for German-speaking jobs in Spain – especially in customer service, IT, sales, marketing and financial services. International companies and startups often specifically value German-speaking staff to support the DACH market, frequently even without Spanish skills at the start.
Work permit
As an EU citizen, you don't need a work permit for Spain and can stay in the country for up to three months without special formalities. For a longer stay, you register at the local town hall and apply for a Número de Identificación de Extranjero (NIE) – you'll need this for a bank account, rental contract and payroll, among other things.
Salary & cost of living
Customer service is one of the most commonly filled roles for German speakers in Spain. Overall cost of living is lower than in Germany, Austria or Switzerland, though Barcelona and Madrid are noticeably more expensive for rent and everyday costs than smaller cities.
Language requirements
For many entry-level customer service roles, German at "Fluent (B2-C1)" or "Native level (C2)" as the main language is enough, complemented by English. Spanish isn't usually required to get started, but it's very helpful for everyday life outside international companies.
