Key points for your CV in Spain

  • Language follows the job ad: for German-speaking jobs a CV in German or English is usually fine – you only need a Spanish “currículum” for ads in Spanish.
  • Languages at the top: for language jobs, employers first check your German level. Use CEFR, e.g. “German – native, English – B2”.
  • 1–2 pages, clear, no graphics: many companies use applicant tracking software that often can't read tables and icons.
  • Photo optional: common in Spain, but not required at international companies.
  • State your availability: when can you start in Spain? Mention it in the short profile at the top.

Frequently asked questions

Does my CV for Spain have to be in Spanish?

Not for jobs that require German. International companies in Barcelona, Málaga or Valencia hire German speakers specifically and usually expect a CV in German or English. Follow the language of the job ad – a Spanish CV (“currículum vitae”) only makes sense for ads written in Spanish.

Should I include a photo on a CV for Spain?

Photos are common in Spain, especially in traditional sectors, but not required. International companies and tech employers expect them less often. In the builder you can add or leave out the photo with one click.

How long should my CV be?

One to two pages. For entry-level and customer service jobs, one clear page without graphics is usually enough.

Do I need a Europass CV?

No. Europass is recognised in Spain but not required by private employers. A clear, short CV with CEFR language levels (e.g. “German – native, English – B2”) is usually more convincing.

Do I need an NIE number on my CV?

No. You usually apply for the NIE (foreigner identification number) once you work in Spain. ID numbers don't belong on a CV. See the “Working in Spain” guide for details.

Do I need to speak Spanish to work in Spain?

For many jobs, no. Most German-speaking jobs in Spain on Apply & Stay Jobs require German and English; Spanish is a plus at most.
