Tips for a CV for jobs abroad

  • Short profile at the top: 2–3 sentences about who you are and the job you're looking for.
  • Languages first: for language jobs, your languages and CEFR levels are what employers check first.
  • Tasks as bullet points: with active verbs, e.g. “Advised customers by phone and email”.
  • Photo and date of birth: common for German-speaking employers, usually left out internationally.
  • Keep it to 1–2 pages and use a simple date format, e.g. “03/2023 – present”.

English or German CV?

If the job ad is in German and the company is looking for German speakers, a German CV (Lebenslauf) often works best. If the ad is in English or the team is international, send an English CV. With the builder you get both versions in seconds – just switch the CV language. Not sure about your language level? Read language levels explained.

Frequently asked questions

Is the CV builder really free?

Yes. You create your CV completely free – no subscription, no hidden costs and no watermark. You download the PDF instantly.

Do I need to create an account?

No. You can start right away. You only need a free candidate profile if you want to save your CV and apply to jobs with one click later.

Can I create a German CV (Lebenslauf) as well?

Yes. Switch the CV language between English and German in the last step. Headings, language names and language levels are translated automatically – you write your own texts in the language you choose.

Should I add a photo to my CV?

For German, Austrian and Swiss employers a photo is common. In Ireland, Malta, the UK and at many international companies, a CV without a photo is standard. The photo is optional – leave it out with one click.

How do I list language skills on my CV?

Use the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), e.g. “German – Native speaker”, “English – C1 (fluent)”, “Spanish – B1 (intermediate)”. The builder does this automatically.

What happens to my data?
