Working in Cyprus

Overview

Cyprus is an EU member state and an appealing destination for many German speakers: a mild climate, English widely used in daily life and at work, and a job market in which tourism, services and international companies play a big role. The main cities are Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca and Paphos. For German speakers, openings are mostly in customer service, support and hospitality.

Registration & residence

As an EU citizen you don't need a work permit. You can stay for up to three months without registering. If you want to stay longer, you need to register with the Cypriot migration authority. You receive a registration certificate (form MEU1), commonly called the "Yellow Slip".

According to the sources we found, the application must be submitted within four months of arrival. You typically need your passport or ID card, passport photos and proof of the reason for your stay, for example confirmation of employment.

Deadlines, documents and fees can change. Please check them directly with the Cypriot migration authority before you apply.

Tax & social insurance

Your employer normally handles social insurance registration: it must register with the Social Insurance Services and notify new hires electronically before they start. According to the official business portal, the employee contribution is 8.8% of insurable earnings, in addition to the employer's own contributions.

For tax purposes you need a Cypriot tax number. Ask your employer how and when it is applied for. For an overview of the numbers in other countries, see our guide to tax and social security numbers.

Salary & cost of living

The statutory minimum wage since 1 January 2026 is €979 per month for the first six months of employment and €1,088 thereafter. Entry-level salaries in multilingual customer service are usually higher, depending on the employer. Always check the figure in the job ad and your contract.

Rents vary a lot. According to a Cyprus Mail report from April 2026 (based on Numbeo estimates), a one-bedroom flat in the city centre costs around €693 per month in Nicosia, €800 in Larnaca, €1,000 in Paphos and €1,340 in Limassol. Outside the centres prices are lower. Rents have been rising, so plan realistically and try to view flats in person.

Language requirements

Roles for German speakers usually require German at "Fluent (B2-C1)" level, often combined with English for internal communication. Greek or Turkish isn't required for many jobs but helps in everyday life. Our language-level guide explains what the levels mean.

As of 2026. Not legal or tax advice – please check current regulations with the relevant Cypriot authorities or a professional advisor.
