COUNTRY GUIDE

Working in Bulgaria

Overview

Bulgaria has been an EU member since 2007 and adopted the euro as its official currency on 1 January 2026. For German speakers the most relevant openings are in multilingual customer service and support, many of them in the capital, Sofia, where international companies serve customers from German-speaking countries. Bulgarian is usually not required for these roles, but it makes everyday life easier.

Registration & residence

As an EU citizen you don't need a work permit. For stays of up to three months a valid ID card or passport is enough. If you want to stay longer, you need to register with the Migration Directorate of the Bulgarian Ministry of Interior.

According to the sources we found, a residence certificate is required and should be applied for within three months of entering the country. The exact documents depend on your situation, for example an employment contract as proof of the reason for your stay.

Deadlines, documents and terminology can change. Please confirm them with the migration authority or your employer before you apply.

Tax & social insurance

Tax and social insurance in Bulgaria work with their own numbers and registrations. Your employer normally registers you as an employee. Ask before you start which numbers you need and when they are applied for. For an overview of the numbers in other countries, see our guide to tax and social security numbers.

Salary & cost of living

According to WageIndicator, the statutory minimum wage since 1 January 2026 is €620 per month (previously BGN 1,213). Salaries in multilingual customer service are usually well above that, depending on the employer and your language. Rely on the figure in the job ad and your contract.

The conversion rate was €1 = BGN 1.95583. Overall, Bulgaria is considered inexpensive compared with Germany, Austria or Switzerland, especially for rent outside central Sofia. Look at current rental listings before you commit.

Language requirements

Customer service roles usually ask for German at "Fluent (B2-C1)" level, often combined with English for internal communication. Our language-level guide explains what the levels mean.

As of 2026. Not legal or tax advice – please check current regulations with the relevant Bulgarian authorities or a professional advisor.
